→ Say Goodbye to the Violence Against Women Act
For the first time since it was first passed in 1994, the Violence Against Women Act no longer exists. Because some in the House refused to pick up the bipartisan Senate bill because they objected to new provisions to protect Native Americans, LGBT women, and immigrants and instead passed a bill that further stripped away protections, the reauthorization bills have lapsed.
Proponents of VAWA are already working on a reauthorization for the new Congress, but in the meantime, this means fewer resources across the board for those who work with survivors of domestic violence.
